Standard Templates

Standard templates are pre-approved message formats used on WhatsApp Business API to communicate with customers in a structured and compliant manner. These templates are designed to ensure consistent and high-quality communication that adheres to platform guidelines.

Steps to create a standard template:

1. Components of a Standard Template:

Standard templates are typically composed of several elements, each serving a specific purpose:

  • Body: The main content of the message, which is mandatory.
  • Header: An optional element that can include text, images, documents, or videos to enhance the message.
  • Footer: An optional element that provides additional information or a disclaimer at the bottom of the message.
  • Buttons: Interactive elements that allow users to take specific actions, such as quick replies or call-to-action buttons.

2. Mandatory and Optional Components:

  • Mandatory: The body text is the only mandatory component required in every template.
  • Optional: Headers, footers, and buttons can be included based on the specific needs of the message.

3. Types of Headers

Headers can vary in format to add context or visual appeal to the message:

  • Text: Simple textual headers to introduce the main content.
  • Image: Visual headers that can engage users more effectively.
  • Document: Attachments that provide detailed information.
  • Video: Dynamic content that can provide a richer user experience.

4. Types of Buttons

Buttons provide interactive options for users:

  • Quick Reply: Predefined response options that users can select.
  • Call-to-Action: Buttons that direct users to a website or initiate a phone call.

Points to Note:

  • Only jpeg and png file type for image is supported. The max. file size should not be more than 5 mb. Try to keep the file size as small as possible so that your customers can easily download the image.
  • WhatsApp recommended aspect ratio for image is 1.91:1.
  • For video, the max. file size should not be more than 10 mb. Again, keep the file size as small as possible.
  • You can only use PDF file as document in document header.
  • The maximum character limit (including characters for variables) should not exceed 1024 characters.
  • You can only add one type of button in the template - Quick Reply or Call to Action Button. Both cannot be added together.
  • You can only add up to a maximum of 3 Quick Reply buttons in a template.
  • As per WhatsApp, The max. character limit for button name is 24 characters.
  • For add sample media (document, video and image), the max. file size allowed is 4mb.
  • Usually, it takes 5-10 minutes to get a template approved. However, as per Meta, it can take up to 24 hrs. to get a template approved.

Why are my templates getting rejected?

Utility Template:

META is very strict with Utility template guidelines. The template must not contain any promotional content, such as:

  • Promoting a product
  • Promising a discount
  • Advertising an upcoming event

These are all considered forms of marketing and will lead to rejection. If your utility template adheres to these guidelines and still gets rejected, contact support to appeal the decision.

Not able to submit the template, getting meta server error

Try creating the template again after 10 minutes with a different name. If the issue persists, please contact our support team.

What should I add in the sample variables tab?

Sample Variables tab is to let META know how this specific template will look like when being sent to customers.

The image sample can be any image.

The variable sample can be similar to the intended use-case, for eg: If {{1}} is intended to show the customer name, type any random name within the variable sample tab.

Unable to upload a media header(image/video) in templates

  • When uploading a video as a part of a template, it should be less than 15MB, be in mp4 format, and have a resolution of 940 x 500 pixels.
  • When uploading an image as a part of a template, it should be less than 15MB.
  • If the video and image specifications are following the above guidelines, try uploading the media header from your end and confirm there is no issue.
